Legalize Prostitution Essay

Legalize Prostitution BY rwl 9680101 Stand-Alone Project, Part A: Select a contemporary legal issue discussed during this course. Select a topic that interests you. Perform the research. Prostitution: Ethics to Legitimize the Business Many people find the ethical considerations of the death penalty to be highly controversial. However, another highly controversial topic is the legalization of prostitution. Considering my knowledge on this subject and talking to average women who aren’t prostitutes, IVe come to the conclusion that prostitution should be legalized. The courts and the police have more to contend with than two adult eople having consensual sex. Prostitution has a long and interesting history. It’s mentioned in numerous texts and often referred to as the â€Å"oldest profession. † Indeed, it has always been a common way for women to make money, even in biblical times. It wasn’t until Christianity and the Bible condemned prostitution within versus such as Proverbs 23:27-28, â€Å"For a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well. Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men. Basically, prostitutes were shunned for their corruption of married men as a moral conflict. Historically, it was common to trade women for property, pleasure and used as alliances between countries and kingdoms. A person can be against prostitution all he or she wants to, but the fact remains that prostitution happened in the past and will continue to happen in the future. It’s a common a ct of the sexes where biological needs can out way monetary cost and societal norm ethical barriers. The business minded culture would call this supply and demand and the blue collar worker would call it an honest days work for an honest days pay. Either way, it’s not that legitimate kingdoms or governments have not recognized prostitution hroughout history, but it appears that they merely renamed and Justified it into something legitimate. History also reminds us that in many ancient cultures, female prostitution was an accepted profession for many women, especially those who could not earn a living any other way – husbands killed in war or died from laboring. It wasn’t until the church – especially the Christian church – decided that sex was bad and that prostitution became a ‘sordid’ form of employment. Even then, on and off, prostitution and brothels enjoyed varying levels of acceptance in the public eye. Some cities and towns had entire ‘red light districts’ where brothels were, if not welcomed, at least tolerated, so long as the owners and management made their ‘donations’ to the local law enforcement. Thus, while strictly illegal, the proliferation of prostitution enabled police corruption to flourish as well. The roots of prostitution may be more evolutionary than previously thought stemming from hereditary instincts of our long forgotten ancestry. A study was conducted in University in Singapore which was accepted for publication in the Journal Animal Behavior (Dec, 2007). In his study of the macaque monkeys he discovered that the mount of grooming a male performs on a female prior to a sexual interaction is related to the supply/demand ratio of females per male and males to females at the time of the grooming. Here’s where that â€Å"supply and demand† or â€Å"an honest days work for an honest days pay’ philosophy comes into play. Basically, male monkeys – especially lower status ones – have to groom more and longer to get some female action when there are fewer females around. Gumert, analyzed a wild population of long-tailed macaques at TanJung Puting National Park in Indonesia, from 2003 to Dr. Gumert analyzed the long-tailed macaques from 2003 to 2005 located at 005. the TanJung Putting National Park in Indonesia.

Diversity in America Essay

Diversity in america is a trademark of the beauty in our country. Without diversity, America wouldn’t be what it is today. A country that is an obvious reflection of the multiple cultures it contains. The rise and struggle of the African-Americans, The Spanish, Asian, and European immigrants who have all come to the U.S. and contributed to a diverse country. Chinese resturaunts, Soccer, Spanish music, There are so many diverse things that we love. With myself being a part of the Diverse community, it has shown me that being different doesn’t matter. Whether you’re Black, White, or Guynease, anyone can be accepted and become a good friend. In my parents home country of Guyana, the diversity is limited and its shows as they still live as if they are in the 90’s. Being as diverse as the United States has its challenges, races don’t always get along, there is always a feeling of prejudice, and stereotypes put fake labels on people. These challenges can’t always be always be solved it’s up to the people to Be more open minded. Langston Hughes faced a great amount of racism in his days, he had this to say, â€Å"I learned very early in life that our race problem is not really of black against white, and white against black. It’s a problem of people who are not very knowledgeable, or who have small minds, or small spirits.† This quote from hughes tells it all. The benefits from being such a diverse country outweigh the bad, being so diverse means many different people who have different interest and lifestyles. This presents a society where people of all different races are friends and learn from one another. The climate of acceptance in the U.S. is very high, i feel a haitian or cuban immigrant can come to the U.S. and be welcomed and ultimately succeed in this country. This is done by eliminating any racial exceptions and qualifications. Limiting Prejudice is no easy task for any country, there is no law you can put in place to stop it. Ultimately the people have to be educated and told that prejudice is just a factor that exists in your mind to create doubt. They have to know that races are not what many people may perceive. The appreciation for diversity in this country comes from the appreciation of the friends we have made who celebrate their diverse holidays that we too should embrace and the ways of other people and their culture. I happen to already know that our country does appreciate the diversity here and wouldn’t want to see it go and become one-sided. I hold myself to not being prejudice and being accepting, I like to learn of other cultures every once in awhile and be inclusive. All in all, Diversity is an important part of our society and it is a benefit to our country.

Personal Statement Example Everything I saw served as a powerful impetus for my new beginning. I went to WHS where I did everything possible to adapt to new culture and language. I stayed at school late in order to learn English and I was blessed to have supportive people who helped me a lot to succeed. Later, I went to Manchester Community College where I spent 3 productive years. I managed to combine my efforts in learning with personal development opportunities that I was fortunate enough to get. I felt the power of community; I was a student leader, a vice-president in three student clubs and a member of two honor societies. My new leadership skills gave beginning to new ambitions I was going to pursue in life. I made a serious decision to transfer to CCSU and this is my second semester here. I am not intended to stop. I used to be separated from my dream by thousands of kilometers, language barrier and required level of education. I have managed to cope with all these three obstacles and now I am here ready to move further and achieve more. I am not afraid of new challenges; on the contrary, I am anticipating this new start to become a better version of myself in all

Hemingway and McLain, A Critical Study Research Paper

Hemingway and McLain, A Critical Study - Research Paper Example The story unfolds as the flamboyant Brett and unfortunate Jakes journey from the wild nights in Paris to bullfighting rings of Spain with a miscellaneous group of expatriates. It defines the postwar age of moral bankruptcy, unrealized love, spiritual dissolution and vanishing illusions (Timeless Hemingway 1) ‘The Paris Wife’ by Paul McLain was published in 2011. The novel is a biographical fiction about Hemmingway’s first marriage to his wife Hadley. The author explores the time periods, cultures and the prominent artistic neighborhood that the couple lived in and how Hemmingway became a good writer (McLain 3). A Critical Study The two novels are connected in many ways. First Hemmingway in his novel revolves around characters Jake Barnes and his expatriate friends in Paris. They occasionally work but spend a lot of time partying, drinking and arguing. The author uses Jakes Perspective to bring out the cast of other characters in the story. Lady Brett Ashley is bro ught out as exciting, beautiful and unpredictable British divorcee. Another important character is Robert Cohn who weak, unlucky and even is unsuccessful as a writer (Boon, 18). McLean on the other hand views Hemmingway through Hadley’s eyes. The story opens in Paris before an extended flashback where Hadley recalls her early days in St. Louis, how she met Hemingway and their short courtship. The author shows their life in Paris from the humble beginning in the garret apartment to the notorious trip to Lausanne during which Hadley lost all of Hemmingway’s drafts of three years. Other trips that inspired Hemingway’s ‘The Sun also Rises’ include the Paris races, Skiing in Austria and bullfighting in Pamplona (Boon 19). The time frame in the two stories is similar where both are set in the post world war 1 period. The two novels depict an era of open relationships or marriages. In ‘The sun also rises’, McLain shows male artists Fond, Pound and eventually Hemmingway taking their mistresses to the same home as their wife. In Hemingway’s novel, Brett is separated from her husband and waiting divorce. She has affairs with a number of men but she does not want to commit to a relationship with any of them. Even though she loves Jake she is unwilling to give up sex in order to commit to him (Wagner 31). The two novels depict the aimlessness of the lost generation. The men and women who faced the war became psychologically and morally lost. In Hemmingway’s novel, Jake, Brett and their friends no longer believe in anything. Their lives are empty and the consequences are drinking, escapist activities such as dancing and debauchery. McLain brings out Hemingway and his friends lives to be similar. She refers to them as the fabled ‘lost generation’ that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Despite the love that he shared with his wife, Hemingway grows costly and this be comes more challenging to Hadley (Burke 26). The characters are connected in a way. Hemingway uses Jake to show the effects of a young man’s life after war trying to put back the pieces together. Jake is wounded after war. Although he does not say so straightforwardly, there are several suggestions in the novel that show results of his injury; he lost the ability to have sex. In many ways he appears to fit in the â€Å"lost generation† group whose experiences in the world-war 1 undermines

Readmission - Essay Example I had to undergo a lot of stress and due to this aspect, I had a double mind. I know now that I should have given priority to my studies and then to my girlfriend, but within the thick of things I just could not do what I should have carried out. I regret the inconvenience that it caused to the Purdue University but I am sure nothing of this sort will ever happen again, as I have realized the gravity of the mistake that I had committed. I have fortunately overcome the situation that I was engulfed within. Now I can concentrate whole-heartedly towards my studies and this is the single most significant reason why my academic record shall increase in the coming times. I am sure that I will improve on my record if I am given a chance to showcase my true skills and mettle. This is in line with my vision to set things right within my study realms. I have an undecided major within the university but I am certain that I shall take one up as soon as I am allotted the readmission that would put me in a better position to comprehend the study nuances. For this, I need to be within the university itself to decide which major would be deemed as the most significant one and where I shall achieve success in the coming times. As for now, I am still undecided because I need to learn on my own and acquire more skills because this will set the ball rolling for my career. Ever since I was dropped from the Purdue University, I have gained fresh insights. I have realized that education is the basis of every human success that is achieved in this day and age. I have also come to terms with the comprehension that I need to set my own house in order before delving into other zones. Also my priorities should be straight so that I could achieve what I direly need for myself. This is something that could be seen as a positive within my personality which has come about in the recent times. In the end, I would request the management at the

Solar Power Industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Solar Power Industry - Essay Example The success of U.S oil production company, Shale, has caused various producers sleepless nights. GCC countries are greatly concerned with this ‘unhealthy’ trend that is hurting their economies badly. Augustine (2013, December 9) reports that many cities and countries in the GCC such as Doha, Qatar have undergone massive development due to high oil prices. This article piqued my interest as it focuses on the future and affects every country. Also, it spots various loopholes in the developing countries. Further,it proposes various measures that the young citizens of various developing countries should put to task to ensure their respective countries are at par with global standards in various sectors such as technology, education, and the service industry in the future. In an effort to explore the on-surface effects, as well as the extended market effect, I will explore various microeconomic concepts such as the theory of the firms, consumer theory, and the demand and supply side of the market. The ease with which new firms enter market imposes great threat to existing firms and the future of such industry (Perloff, 2011, p. 154). This can result to possible exit of other firms in the event a firm that enjoys great economies of scale engages in unhealthy business competition. Shale company successful positioning in the market due to high technology it employs in mining has made it increase its output with the current level of inputs. It experiences increase return to scale due to efficiency with which it conducts its operation. Consequently, it can decide to lower the prices of its product and this will impact negatively on the future of other firm, and various positions they hold in the market. A single firm’s action in a competitive market affects other firms. The global oil price is expected to fall below $100 a

Minimum Wage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Minimum Wage - Essay Example Critics are of the view that minimum wage forces employers to appoint only skilled workers and therefore employees with lesser skills may struggle to get employment. This paper argues in favour of minimum wage after analysing both the sides of the issue. â€Å"The vast majority of economists believe the minimum wage law costs the economy thousands of jobs†(Messerli). In their opinion, enforcement of minimum wage will decrease the demand for workers. They explain their argument based on the supply and demand theory of economics. When salary goes up, supply of workers will also goes up and thereby the demand for the workers will geos down. In other words, when supply increases, demand decreases. The above theory might be true in theoretical terms, but in practical terms, it may not be so. It should be noted that majorities of the western countries are outsourcing their jobs to India like Asian countries at present because of the labour shortage. It should be noted that in countr ies like America and Britain, an ordinary worker is getting salaries, three to four times more than that an Indian worker is getting in his country. In other words, even though the wages are high, supply of labour force is not increasing in countries like America and Britain. On the other hand, in India like countries even though the wages are low, excess of supply of labour is in place. ... Part-time work and full time work should be separated from each other. Minimum wage for part time work need not be the same as that of the full time. Authorities can prescribe separate norms of minimum wage with respect to part time and full time work. Moreover, separate minimum wage norms can be enforced with respect to the qualification and experience of the employees. â€Å"Abolishing the minimum wage will allow businesses to achieve greater efficiency and lower prices. Anytime you give businesses more flexibility, you will increase efficiency and lower prices† (Messerli). It is an accepted fact that only a satisfied worker will try to deliver more than 100% of his efficiency. In other words, workers who struggle to get a decent salary may not be fully committed to the organization. It is better for an organization to have more committed workers to increase its efficiency and productivity rather than having a huge workforce of unskilled or cheaper labours. Salary is the maj or motivating factor for the employees and therefore minimum wage will definitely motivate the workers more and thereby the organization will be benefitted. â€Å"Adults who currently work for minimum wage are likely to lose jobs to teenagers who will work for much less. Many adults trying to make a living are forced to work minimum wage jobs† (Messerli). Employers may exploit the workers in the absence of a minimum wage law. They will try to terminate experienced workers even without any reasons, for appointing fresh workers in order to reduce their employee wage expenditure. Thus, even experienced employees will be forced to work under tremendous pressure if minimum wage law is not implemented. In the absence of minimum law, business will take undue advantages in the form of

Reading report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Reading report - Essay Example This was already becoming normal at that time† (Orwell 1984 Book 2, Chapter 7). Private loyalties are cut because it is one of the best ways to ensure loyalty to the state. In connection to the loss of privacy, the Party can make it easy to undermine their enemy by connecting rebellion to the idea of perpetual war. The Party calls it a distant war that happens all the time to stress that the war has no essence and direction. By focusing on the individual and the perpetual timeframe of war, the Party shows the people that it is senseless to support a war that has no specific meaning and outcomes. 1984 further notes that doublespeak propaganda slogans such as â€Å"War is Peace,† â€Å"Freedom is Slavery,† and â€Å"Ignorance is Strength† is meant to clutter the language and make it less effective in attaining its impact of changing people’s mindsets and behaviors. In â€Å"Politics and the English Language,† Orwell argues that the fall of the E nglish language roots from economic and political causes, and not literary causes (1). He shows that people use vague and imprecise language with purposes of deceiving people. In 1984, doublespeak propaganda is meant to deceive people. ... .† (Orwell â€Å"Politics† 3) because they do not stand for anything clear and specific. He adds the example of â€Å"democracy,† which is automatically seen as something positive, when its usage has potentially misleading purposes (Orwell â€Å"Politics† 4). The same goes for doublespeak- they sound nice and rebellious, but they are vague enough to be unreliable and meaningless. Doublespeak propaganda is propaganda, the propaganda of using language to lie to people and to shape their minds into thinking that these lies are truths. â€Å"The Two-Minute Hate† broadcast and its reliance on images of Goldstein and foreign-looking individuals running around guns has something to do with language manipulation once more. Politicians manipulate language for its own selfish purposes, and not for the good of the people. â€Å"The Two-Minute Hate† encourages people to see Goldstein in a bad light, bad enough to be hated. It is an example of subverting l anguage through using images and words that pollute people’s capacity to think about what is being said to them. â€Å"The Two-Minute Hate† helps the Party in conditioning the minds of the people through controlling their emotions. The Party knows the right language to use to evoke the right emotions, which can lead to better control of their thoughts and actions. As for the idea of idea of all-knowing Big Brother (government) and a total lack of privacy in a technologically advanced society, the government does Newspeak, Doublespeak, and Thoughtcrimes to decrease people’s thinking practices and content. Newspeak decreases people’s thinking process. Syme says: â€Å"Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make

Db1 managing high performance Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Db1 managing high performance - Research Paper Example I prefer the free reign type of leadership to the autocratic. Free reign leadership style is motivational to employees, and it gives them room to exchange ideas within themselves and even work towards the same goal. Autocratic does not give the employees room to participate in the decision-making process, exercising of individual leadership styles hence influencing negatively on worker talents and skills (Gino, 2013). While working with Digg Company, I observed the management styles employed by the company director, Mr. Willy to be laissez-Faire. Mr. Willy delegated duties, responsibilities coupled with adequate authority to his junior staff, gave them room to take part in the decision-making process, and without strict supervision. It helped the company meet its set goals within the period; employees felt encouraged and motivated. On the contrary, Mrs. Helena, the sales representative of Frontier Marketers Company, where I started my career, designed an autocratic style that did not achieve success (Benincasa, 2012). She harshly directed her employees, fired and hired without warning. It led to employees feeling inferior, could not contribute much to organization’s development, and soon losses struck the company.
